As of my last update in September 2021, self-drive safaris in Uganda were becoming increasingly popular among adventurous travelers. Uganda is a beautiful country in East Africa, renowned for its diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality.

Here are some essential tips and information for planning a self-drive safari in Uganda:

Renting a Vehicle: To embark on a self-drive safari, you’ll need to rent a reliable 4×4 vehicle. Several car rental companies offer this service in major cities like Kampala and Entebbe. Make sure the vehicle is well-maintained, as some of the national parks and game reserves have rough roads.

Permits and Fees: Before heading into any national park or wildlife reserve, you’ll need to obtain permits for various activities. For example, if you plan to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you’ll need a gorilla permit, which should be obtained well in advance due to limited availability. Other permits may be required for chimpanzee tracking, game drives, and bird watching.

Navigation and GPS: It’s essential to have a reliable GPS and a map of the areas you plan to visit. While Uganda’s road infrastructure is improving, some areas may still lack proper signage, so having a GPS can be quite helpful.

Wildlife and Safety: Always remember that you are in the wild, and the animals you encounter are wild and unpredictable. Keep a safe distance from them and never attempt to feed or approach them. Be cautious while driving in national parks, as animals may cross the roads unexpectedly.
