Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a thrilling and unforgettable experience that allows you to get up close and personal with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda is one of the few places in the world where you can find these majestic creatures in the wild. The country is home to two national parks that offer gorilla trekking opportunities: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Here’s what you need to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda:
Permit: To go gorilla trekking in Uganda, you will need a permit. It’s essential to book your permit well in advance, as they are limited in number and highly sought after. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and are valid for one day of gorilla trekking.
Cost: The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is higher compared to some other African countries but varies depending on the season. As of my last update in September 2021, the permit price was around $700-$800 USD per person. However, these prices may have changed, so it’s best to check the latest information from UWA.
Trekking Groups: Trekking groups are limited to a maximum of eight people, including guides and trackers. Each group is assigned to a specific gorilla family, and the trek can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas that day.
Fitness and Health: Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding as it involves hiking through dense forest and steep terrain. Trekkers should be in reasonably good physical condition and be prepared for challenging conditions.
Tracking Experience: The trekking experience is led by experienced guides and trackers who are knowledgeable about the gorillas and the surrounding environment. They help locate the gorilla families and ensure the safety and well-being of both visitors and gorillas.
Gorilla Encounter: Once you find the gorilla family, you will be allowed to spend a limited time (usually one hour) in their presence. This is a unique opportunity to observe these incredible creatures as they go about their daily activities.
Eco-Tourism and Conservation: Gorilla trekking in Uganda is considered a form of eco-tourism. The revenue generated from permits contributes to the conservation of gorillas and their habitats, as well as supporting local communities living around the national parks.
Best Time to Go: Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Uganda. However, the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to February, are generally considered the best times to visit. During the wet season, the trails can be more challenging due to rain and muddy conditions.
Remember that gorilla trekking is a sensitive activity, and strict rules and guidelines are in place to protect the gorillas and their habitats. Follow the instructions of your guides and practice responsible tourism to ensure the conservation of these magnificent creatures for future generations.
